What’s Happening in Hot Yoga
Hot yoga has been increasing in popularity amongst the many different workout regimes that have developed in the last decade. From HIIT workouts to Zumba classes, more and more seem to pop up around the Reno area. Hot yoga has made a mark in the Northern Nevada community and, Juice Box Yoga, is looked at as the top yoga studio in the area. Tanya Bordner, owner and founder of Juice Box Yoga, has redefined hot yoga, established in 2005.
The History
“I was one of those people who didn’t need a lot of experience to start a business,” Tanya says. Over the last twenty years, she took her business degree and training of the Bikram method, to then taking over this business and expanding to three total locations. The first location was opened for about eighteen months until Tanya took over. One of the main reasons Tanya is successful at running a business is due to her Great Grandfather. “Even though I never met him, my Grandmother and I have a very close relationship and she would always say he gave her the advice to never expand too soon,” Tanya says. With that, she waited awhile to expand to more locations around Reno. It took many years of hard work and determination to get to this point of success Juice Box has gotten.
Juice Box Yoga offers a variety of fitness and yoga classes. Specializing in heated classes that will make you sweat, Juice Box offers high intensity interval training such as Hot Pilates, LIIFTED (Emphasizes on cardio and weightlifting), HOTBOXX (Full body work where you learn the fundamentals of shadow boxing), and Buti Yoga (Power yoga and cardio intensive tribal dance movement). A variety of intense yoga classes are also offered, even paddleboard and kids yoga. With hot temperatures being the base of Hot Yoga, the beginning of the COVID-19 Pandemic was definitely going to hit fitness-based business harder than most.
Effects of the Pandemic
“We thought it was going to be two weeks — and the day I found out it wasn’t going to be just two weeks, I woke up in the middle of the night knowing we had to pivot,” Tanya recollects from hearing about the pandemic shutting down businesses across the globe. She notes she is truly blessed that Juice Box survived the shut down period, but are still recovering from the time lost inside the different studios. Virtual classes started up and kept the Juice Box community together throughout the last two years. Tanya finds that the community surrounding her business is most important, so losing that close-knit bond was not going to be an option.
Supporting Small Businesses
Tanya also notes her love for small, local business and sharing their work inside Juice Box by selling different types of merchandise.“We focus on small businesses, whether it be local or commonalities. Majority of our retail are other entrepreneurs — predominantly people involved in the yoga business,” Tanya says. From the yoga mats, to athletic wear, the majority are from people who come from a yoga background. Supporting other small, local businesses is something Tanya strives at as a business owner. This also allowed these business to keep their dream alive during the time of the 2020 pandemic.
Future Goals and Advice
As for goals, Tanya ultimately plans to beat Juice Box’s numbers from 2019. Her determination all comes from her years of experience owning a business and what it has taught her. “I went from being a yoga teacher to business owner.” For people struggling on opening their own businesses, Tanya says, “I think if you have a dream, stick with, stay with it, and have a clear vision so you can manifest exactly what it is you want to see in your future.”
